Great Barrier Reef it deserves to be called unique. Great Barrier Reef is a site of outstanding beauty and in the north-east coast of Australia. This stretch of the most extensive coral reef in the world and probably the richest regions in terms of diversity of fauna in the world. This diversity reflects the maturity of an ecosystem that has evolved over millions of years on the continental shelf northeast of Australia. This site contains a diversity of species, including more than 1,500 species of fish, about 360 species of hard coral, 5,000 species of molluscs, and more than 175 species of birds, plus the diversity of sponges, anemones, marine worms and shrimp, among others. Great Barrier Reef also contains the world’s largest collection of coral reefs, with 400 species of corals. It also holds great scientific interest as the habitat of species such as dugong (‘sea cow’) and a large green turtle, an endangered species.
