The older parts of Lagos was surrounded by city walls built in the 16th century when it was the residence of the governor of the Algarve and the fort, Ponta da Bandeira, by Batata beach is part of the 17th century fortress that was added to protect the city. Walk along the gravel road just past the back of the church of Santa Maria square and you will come to ‘golden church’ of St Anthony the famous Lagos which was rebuilt in 1769 the church entrance is through the museum in addition to both museums and churches and well deserved to visit. On the opposite side of the church is the ‘Slave Market’ from the 15th century, where slaves were brought back from the voyage of discovery for sale. On the right side, just above the bridge the marina, the dock area for fishing boats and a few places selling freshly caught fish. The first one at the entrance to the roundabout is clear that Lagos ‘Ship’ (tourist office is nearby). The ‘ball’ roundabout (large black sphere) is at the top of the hill at the end of Avenida dos Descobrimentos, past the fire station – on the way to Dona Ana, Ponta da Piedade, Porto de Mos. The ‘landmark’ The third is the ‘Chair’ (7 large perspex chairs that light up at night!), It is up the hill past the LIDL supermarket on the opposite side of town to the ‘Ball’. Lagos has some stunning scenery, it has been said! From Ponte da Piedade (in front of the lighthouse), you get a fantastic view of the bay with sand swept Lagos Monchique hills as a backdrop, and you can see up to Sagres to the west and past Albufeira to the east.
